Hampton Inn Anaheim Steel Boiler Tank Removal

Segmented dismantling and removal of two 5,000-gallon steel boiler tanks from a restricted-access mechanical area at the Hampton Inn in Anaheim, CA. A difficult project: heavy mineral deposits on the interior of the steel tanks made torch cutting slow and demanding.

Contractor Scope

Defined work and planning

Segmented dismantling and removal of two 5,000-gallon steel boiler tanks from a restricted-access mechanical area at the Hampton Inn in Anaheim, CA. A difficult project: heavy mineral deposits on the interior of the steel tanks made torch cutting slow and demanding.

  • Work-area staging and removal-route planning within the restricted-access space.
  • Sequenced torch cutting and segmented dismantling of the two 5,000-gallon steel boiler tank shells and their steel components, working through heavy mineral deposits built up on the interior of the tank walls.
  • Planning of ventilation, fire-prevention, and material-handling requirements within the contractor work plan.
  • Loading and off-site hauling of removed steel and associated debris.

Project Challenges

This was a difficult project. Heavy mineral deposits had built up on the interior of the steel tank walls, and cutting through that scale with a torch was slow, demanding work compared with cutting clean steel. The tanks were also wrapped in flammable insulation and sat in a small, high-ceiling utility room with minimal airflow, so the crew worked with ducted high-CFM blower fans, strict control of ignition sources, and careful handling of sharp metal edges under high-heat conditions.

Planning

Work was sequenced around limited airflow, equipment access, facility operations, ignition sources, component handling, and the removal route. Project-specific ventilation, hot-work, fire-prevention, shutdown, inspection, and approval responsibilities were planned with the parties identified in the project documents. Independent engineers and inspectors remained responsible for their respective professional services when required.
