SoCal Removal performed the Healing House Food Pantry building demolition at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove. The work involved a designated support building within a prominent Orange County religious campus.
About the property
The campus grew from Reverend Robert H. Schuller’s Garden Grove Community Church, which began with drive-in services in 1955. Its congregation later gathered in Richard Neutra’s sanctuary, now the Arboretum, before the glass cathedral designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee became the landmark associated with the “Hour of Power” broadcasts. The campus passed to the Diocese of Orange in 2012. Christ Cathedral’s campus history.
Christ Cathedral was dedicated for Catholic worship in July 2019 and serves as the Diocese of Orange’s mother church. That continuing use sits alongside the property’s earlier congregation and architectural history. Official dedication record.
For Andre Abajian, the campus also carries a personal connection: he attended childhood school activities there in the early 1990s. Returning as the contractor for a support-building removal brought familiar surroundings into a different stage of his working life.
The assigned building was the Healing House Food Pantry. Identifying that particular structure keeps the demolition story grounded in the work performed within the larger cathedral campus.
Preparing for building removal
The project file includes a pre-demolition abatement subcontract referencing an independent asbestos survey. The documented preparatory scope addressed identified ceiling texture and duct-wrap materials before the building demolition phase.
Separating those activities is an important part of planning a building removal. The demolition team needs a defined work area and a clear handoff from the regulated materials-removal stage.
Demolition and debris handling
The gallery follows the building from its standing condition into equipment demolition and truck loading. Tracked equipment and water application are visible during the work. Those photographs show the relationship between the building footprint, equipment access and debris handling.
At a campus property, a demolition plan should also establish access routes, loading locations and boundaries around neighboring facilities. These details allow the assigned building to be addressed as a specific construction work area.
Institutional demolition in Orange County
SoCal Removal works with owners and project teams on demolition for institutional and commercial properties. For a similar Garden Grove assignment, share the survey, drawings, removal limits and campus access requirements so the scope and sequence can be developed together.
