Flooring Types
Every floor and every layer under it
The finish is only the top layer. The price and the schedule depend on what is bonded underneath.

04
Wood and laminate

05

Epoxy, paint, sealers and toppings removed to the depth the next flooring system requires.
06
Adhesive and residue
Mastic, glue and thin-set scraped or ground only to the written standard, with dust controls matched to the method.
Test Before You Scrape
Tile and mastic are tested separately
Either the tile or the black mastic under it can contain asbestos when the other does not. A negative result keeps the job ordinary flooring removal; a positive one makes it regulated abatement with containment, a waste manifest and, over 100 square feet, an air district notice.
- TestingSamples are collected by an independent Certified Asbestos Consultant or Site Surveillance Technician and analyzed by an accredited lab, at $120–$145 per sample for standard turnaround.
- Ordinary removalFlooring with no asbestos runs $5.25–$6.50 per square foot, including removal, scraping and haul-off.
- Asbestos flooringAsbestos floor tile and black mastic runs $17–$23.50 per square foot. All asbestos abatement, whatever the size, is performed by a Cal/OSHA-registered asbestos abatement contractor under subcontract to SoCal Removal.
Older floors are presumed asbestos
Cal/OSHA treats asphalt and vinyl flooring installed before 1981 as presumed asbestos until an inspection shows otherwise (8 CCR 1529).
Grinding thin-set, mortar beds or concrete is covered by Cal/OSHA’s silica standard: water or vacuum dust collection at the tool and a written exposure control plan (8 CCR 1532.3).
The Handoff
Removed is not the same as ready
“Remove flooring” does not say which layers come out. The proposal names the removal limit and the condition the next trade receives.
Name the layer
Finish only, finish and adhesive, underlayment, mortar bed or topping. Each step down changes production, debris and dust.
Write the substrate condition
Adhesive scraped to a thin film, or ground to clean concrete. The flooring installer’s requirement decides, and it is written into the scope.
Assign what the slab reveals
Cracks, moisture, old coatings and penetrations exposed by removal are documented, and moisture testing, leveling and repair are assigned to named parties.
Occupied Spaces
Flooring removal while the business stays open
Retail, offices, medical suites and schools usually cannot close for flooring work.
After-hours windows
Work scheduled after closing or over weekends, with the space cleaned and returned before opening.
Protecting what stays
Displays, fixtures, casework and equipment covered and worked around, with removal limits marked before the crew starts.
Phased areas
Floors removed in sections so the rest of the space stays in use, with debris routes kept away from customers and staff.

Flooring Removal Questions
Flooring removal FAQs
How much does flooring removal cost?
Our published 2026 price is $5.25–$6.50 per square foot for flooring with no asbestos, including removal, scraping and haul-off. Asbestos floor tile and black mastic runs $17–$23.50 per square foot.
Does my floor tile contain asbestos?
Only testing can tell. The tile and the mastic under it are sampled separately, because either one can contain asbestos when the other does not. Asphalt and vinyl flooring installed before 1981 is presumed to contain asbestos until tested.
Can you remove flooring after hours?
Yes. Retail, office and medical flooring is often removed after closing or over a weekend, with the space cleaned before it reopens.
Will you grind the adhesive off the slab?
If the scope calls for it. Adhesive is scraped or ground only to the condition the flooring installer needs, with silica dust controls when grinding.
Do you install the new flooring?
Our focus is removal and substrate preparation. Installation is by your flooring contractor unless our proposal includes it.
What do you need for a quote?
The floor area, photos, what flooring is there and how many layers, any asbestos test results, the condition the next trade needs, and the hours the space is available.
